Horse, particularly the American Quarter Horse, is the official state horse of Texas that was assigned by the Texas Legislature in 2009. It was named in reference to its ability to overtake other horse breeds in quarter-mile races or less. This powerful, fast, and compact sprinter animal is a hybrid of outstanding sires that include Galloway, Hobby, Chickasaw Indians, Godolphin Arabian, and Steel Dust breeds. It became a significant part of the cattle industry as Texas began its settlement; cowboys used it for gathering, branding, roping, and other open range activities. As an appreciative remembrance, the state of Texas commemorates its significance through historical sites such as the Waggoner Ranch, XIT Ranch, King Ranch, JA Ranch, and the 6666 Ranch.
