Athens is located in Henderson County and is popularly referred to as the world's "Black-Eyed Pea capital. The community is one of the first to acquire the "Certified Retirement Communities" status in Texas, with a current estimated population of 12,700 people. Named after Athens (Alabama), the town has a total size of 19.2 square miles. The 2010 census revealed that there were 2,807 families and 4,110 households. Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is one of the most popular places to visit and is located on the east side of Lake Athens. Others include the East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society and the Cedar Creek Reservoir.
