Denton is a city in and the county seat of Denton County. It was founded in 1857 and was named after John B. Denton, a preacher and an Indian fighter who was killed at the Battle of Village Creek in 1841. The first newspaper was published in 1864 and two years after, the town was incorporated. In 1881, a railroad line was built, which led to the spur of Denton’s population. The city continued to grow, as the University of North Texas in 1890 and the Texas Woman’s University in 1901 were both established. With the completion of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in 1974, the city had more rapid development and Denton became the 7th fastest-growing city in the country. As of 2019, the population had reached 141,541, making Denton the 12th most populous city in the Dallas-Forth Worth metroplex, the 24th most populous city in Texas, and the 196th most populous city in the United States.
