The city of Galveston is a coastal and a resort city that is situated in and is the county seat of Galveston County. The city was named after a Spanish military and political leader, Bernardo de Galvez y Madrid, Count of Galvez. The town’s first European settlements were that of French pirates who settled on Galveston Island, they helped Mexico fight for Independence from Spain. The city was the main port for the Texas Navy during the Texas Revolution in 1836. The post office was built that same year, and the city was incorporated in 1839. The Great Galveston Hurrican that occurred in 1900, was the biggest disaster in the U.S national history. At the 2010 census, the city’s population was 47,743. The town’s total area is 209.3 square miles of which is more than 80 percent water.
