Houston is the most populated city in Texas, with an estimated population of 2,325,502 as of 2018. August Chapman and John Kirby, also known as the Allen brothers explored plots on Galveston Bay and Buffalo Bayou. On August 26, 1836, the brothers bought the south half of the lower union. The town was advertised by the Allen brothers just four days later in the Texas Register and the Telegraph. The town was given the name in the glory of President Sam Houston. Houston was incorporated on June 5, 1837. As James S. Holman became the first-ever mayor of this town. The town is eighth in the most expansive list in the U.S including an entire area of 637.4 square miles.
