Oakwood is was founded in 1872 as an International Railroad stop. It can be found on State Highway 79 three miles west of the Trinity River in the northeastern corner of Leon County. Its population in 2017 was 517. It has a total land area of 1.13 square miles. Also, the U.S. Route 79 runs through the town as Broad Street, leading northeast 18 miles (29 km) to Palestine and southwest 15 miles (24 km) to Buffalo. This town was also popularized in the "Oakwood" single of the indie rock trio, The Redding Brothers. The Oakwood Independent School District served its education. The American mathematician, R. H. Bing, who focused in the areas of geometric topology and continuum theory, was born here on October 20, 1914. Also, Sacred Harp composer, Sarah Lancaster, who was born in Talbot County, Georgia also lived in Oakwood from the 1880s. Famous for her "The Last Words of Copernicus", "I'm on My Journey Home", and "Sardis" published songs, died and buried in the town cemetery of Oakwood in 1918.
