Plainview was chosen over the names Runningwater and Hackberry Grove when a post office was secured on March 18, 1887. It was named as such since a vast treeless plain surrounded the post office. Its settlers in 1886 included the family of Z. T. Maxwell from Floyd County and Edwin Lowden Lowe from Tennessee who took up residence north of the Maxwell homestead. The town has a total area of 13.8 square miles and is situated on Runningwater Draw at the intersection of Interstate Highway 27, U.S. highways 87 and 70, State Highway 194, and numerous local roads, forty-seven miles north of Lubbock and seventy-six miles south of Amarillo in the northeast section of the county. The Burlington Northern and Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroads serve the city. The town received a charter on July 3, 1888, and was chosen as the county seat when Hale County was organized in August of 1888. An early bison kill site dated by scientists at 7,000 to 9,000 years old is also located in the city. Also, a uniquely shaped spear point found at the site in 1941 was later named the Plainview point. In 1963, the Hale County Historical Commission was founded in Plainview in response to a federal directive establishing regional organizations. The population was 20,767 in 2017. The city is served by the Plainview Independent School District. Plainview is also the home of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Region V office. Airports located in Plainview include Hale County Airport (PVW) (Runways: 2), Horan Airport (9TX3) (Runways: 1), Quarterway Airport (7TA3) (Runways: 1), and True Airport (6TS0) (Runways: 1).
