Officially established in 1876, Borden County and its county seat, Gail were named after Gail Borden, Jr. He was a multifaceted man, being a newspaper publisher, a surveyor who helped lay out Houston and having prepared Texas’ first topographical map. He was also an inventor, being credited for the invention of condensed milk, which was used as one of the rationed goods in the military in the 1860s. Borden’s economy is mainly supported by the agriculture and oil industry, by accepting hunting leases, and through the wind turbines. Cotton, oats, hay, pecans, and beef cattle are the primary agricultural products. Borden is one of the counties that are wholly dry, or where alcohol sale is prohibited.
