Jefferson County was originally established as a municipality of Mexico in 1835 but was later organized as a county in 1837 after Texas declared itself as a republic. This county was named in honor of president Thomas Jefferson (no introduction needed). Jefferson county is home to the third largest water port in the United States by tonnage. The economy of Jefferson county is based primarily on petrochemical products and shipping operations. As a large port, there are plenty of things to do in the county and a lot of local businesses are sprouting up to take advantage of all the activity going on.
