The Lightning Whelk, also known as the Busycon perversum pulleyi in Latin, is the official state shell of Texas that was assigned by the Texas Legislature in 1987. It was nationally recognized when it appeared on one of the first shell stamps ever printed by the USPS. Dr. T. E. Pulley, a prominent Texan naturalist and teacher, is the namesake of this specie. It symbolizes the rich diversity of the state’s natural resources and the exceptional beauty of the Texas Gulf Coast region, where the lightning whelks can mostly be found. Lightning whelks are also uniquely enchanting as it is one of the very few shells that open on its left side.
