Friendswood is an incorporated residential community in north western Galveston and southern Harris counties. The community was founded after a colony of English Quakers moved to Texas in 1880. Some residents worked in dairying or raised poultry, but the principal agricultural staples were Satsuma oranges, strawberries, figs, and rice. The community incorporated in 1960. On April 8, 1963, the community became the only dry town in the county. The story of the first 50 years of Friendswood is well documented and presented in the Frank J. Brown Heritage Museum. The 2014 novel Friendswood, set in the area, was written by René Steinke.
