Abilene city stretches into two counties in the US state of Texas — Jones and Taylor. The city has an estimated population of 170,219 and is the 27th most populous city in Texas. The city serves as Abilene Metropolitan Statistical Area’s principal city and Taylor County’s county seat. The city hosts Dyess Air Force Base on its west side. Abilene city was established in 1881 and named after Abilene in Kansas. It served as a stock shipping point for cattlemen. Abilene’s economy was initially based on the agricultural and livestock sectors. It has since advanced to include other sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, education, and government.
