The US town of Alto is located in Cherokee in the state of Texas. The town had a population of 1,225, according to the 2010 census. Martin Lacy was the earliest settler in Alto. After settling, he went ahead to build Lacy’s Fort to the west of Alto in 1838. The fort came in handy between 1838 and 1839 when it served as a supply and operations base in the campaign to defeat the Cordova Rebellion. The laying out of Alto town was done in 1849. Its name means “high” in Spanish due to its high elevation. Alto enjoys mild cool winters and hot, humid summers.
