Batesville is located in Zavala County and is one of the census-designated places (CDP) in the state of Texas. It was named after its first occupant, Bates, who arrived and settled here in the 1860s. Bates was the first person to introduce irrigation in the area. He would irrigate and sell two-acre plots to people who were becoming interested in the area’s increasing value and vibrant economy. The city became a major agricultural center in 1876 with the damming of the Leona River. After the Second World War, its economy was further strengthened by more irrigation schemes introduced by local authorities.
