The Brookeland unincorporated community is located between Jasper and Sabine counties in Texas. The community is 13 miles south of Bronson. Its population is estimated at 300. The town was named after John C. Brooke. Brooke served as the first postmaster when a post office was established in the community in 1866. By 1884, Brookeland’s population was approximately 300. By this time, the town had a grist and lumber mill, two general stores, and a steam cotton gin. Two years later, the town’s population had fallen to about 150. In 1902, a new town named Weed, after a railroad official, was formed. Although Weed’s townsite was used, the name was not as lucky, and it soon became part of Brookeland.
