The US unincorporated community of Burkeville is located in Newton County in the US state of Texas. The town is named after John Burke, a wealthy and wealthy New York native who migrated here. Burke donated land where a courthouse was built. The town was founded in 1844, and by within three years, its residents were filing petitions for it to become Newton County’s county seat. For several years, the county seat would switch between Newton and Burkeville until the Texas legislature, in 1856, ordered for the seat to remain permanently in Newton. Burkeville also served as a Confederacy arsenal during the Civil War.
