Named after John F. Campbell, Campbellton was established in the 1860s. It was primarily a ranching community. Other economic activities include manufacturing honey and oil. Campbellton profited from the arrival of the railroad in 1912. From 1960 to 1990, it had three businesses and a post office. Its population was 350 as of 2000 census. Public education is provided by Pleasanton Independent School District. Its first church was built in the 1880s. It has experienced 2 tornadoes in 1966 and in 1973. The estimated median household income is $33,776 as of 2017.
