Celina, in the northwest corner of Collin County, was established in 1876. Settlers were already in the area before then. The name came from John T. Mulkey for his native town in Tennessee. 20 years later, the town was shifted to the railroad. Residents received electricity by Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative in 1937. The first school in Celina was a small wooden structure that was in the neighborhood of the Jeff Malone residence. The town grew steadily after World War II. Currently as of 2017 census, Celina has a population of 9,836. Celina has the 2nd largest geographic footprint in Collin County.
