Charlotte was named after one of the daughters on Dr. Charles Simmons, who aided in the development of Atascosa County. The land was originally been the Tobey Ranch. The town was platted as a wagon wheel with spokes leading into the town center by J. F. Edwards in 1910. Incorporation began at 1946. Coahuiltecan Indian groups once roamed the site. Ranching was the basic industry, followed by cotton crop, dairy farms and oil production. The first school was conducted in a dance hall above the bakery in 1913. The Charlotte Sports Foundation provides leadership for sports-based initiatives in the Charlotte region.
