Collegeport, Texas is found in southwestern Matagorda County. The combination of a port and the college gave the settlement its name. The town became a stop on a railway in 1911. In 1924, a severe ice storm killed most of the cattle. Currently, Collegeport has the appearance of a ghost town. The largest home in the area now is surrounded by a large chain-link fence. By 1938 the Collegeport Independent School District had been formed which then consolidated with the Palacios Independent School District in 1948. The area was also known to be the Town of Opportunity after Hurd, a developer advertised Collegeport.
