Commerce is fifteen miles from Greenville in northeastern Hunt County. Its origins came from William Jernigin and Josiah Jackson. The area was initially a trading post. Thename came due to the thriving economy activity among the cotton fields and ranch lands. Commerce is the second largest town in Hunt County with a current population of 8,078 in 2010. Commerce is one of the smallest college towns in Texas. Texas A&M University-Commerce has been in town since 1894. Commerce was named the "Bois d'Arc Capital of Texas” by the Texas Legislature because of its location. Held every September, the annual Bois d'Arc Bash pays homage to the native trees.
