Cost is an unincorporated community in Gonzales County. It was formed as a community when German settlers first arrived in the area in the 1890s. Cost was originally named Oso which is the Spanish word for “bear.” The name was changed to Cost when the post office was granted to Samuel C. Hindman’s store in 1897. The first shot in the Texas Revolution was fired a mile east of the site of Cost in 1835. The first business in the community was a general store, followed by a saloon. However, both businesses were closed in 1890. During the next decade, businesses have been opened in the area: a blacksmith shop, a public school, a store, a telephone line, and a Baptist church. The Cost Hot Well also plays a significant role in the community’s social life. It was a strong-flowing, artesian sulfur spring that was turned into a spa in 1925. By 1990, the community reported a variety of businesses that includes a grocery store, a feed and fertilizer store, a welding shop, and an oilfield chemical supply house.
