Delmita is a census-designated place in Starr County. Nicéforo G. Peña, Sr. founded the community in 1919, when he moved to the area with his family and opened up a ranch, a general store, and a post office. He originally named the town as Zaragosa; however, because the mail was frequently confused with that of Saragosa in Reeves County, Zaragosa changed its name in 1931. Based on some records, the name was changed to Delmita, a designation created from the letters that were drawn by Peña, Sr.’s seven sons. In 1940, Delmita became the most important community in the northeastern Starr County; however, the schools and churches merged and moved their headquarters in San Isidro, which shrank the community down to a few houses and a single store. In 1991, a new post office was inaugurated and by the year 2000, Delmita had fifty residents.
