Denver City is a town that is located mostly in Yoakum County, but partly in Gaines County. The town was founded in 1939 upon the development of the Wasson oil pool. Denver was named after Denver Productions, when one of the founders, C.S. Ameen, had a close friend who worked for that petroleum company. Ameen then added “city” to the name to show his faith in the town’s future. Soon after, the town was incorporated and had a refinery, a gas, and a water system. Oil and ranching remained to be the city’s economic mainstay. In addition, Denver City became home to six financial institutions, three churches, two hotels, a fully functional hospital, a car dealership, a grocery store, and an airport.
