Deport is a city in Lamar and Red River counties. It was founded in the late 1800s by Col. Dee Thompson, in search of water for his horses. Hence, where the city was named after. A local post office was established in 1883 and by 1896, the town had around twenty businesses, five physicians, three music teachers, a milliner, a hotel keeper, and a population of 600. Cotton, corn, and high-grade livestock production has been the economic mainstay of the town and its surrounding areas. In 1911, the city was incorporated, a railway was built, and the population doubled three years later. Although the catastrophic fire in 1929 and the effects of the Great Depression decreased the population and knocked down much of the businesses, the town managed to get through the next 20 years. In the mid-1950s, however, the railroad was discontinued.
