Elkhart is a town in Texas that lies strategically at the intersection of the State Highway 294 and US Highway 287. Elkhart was granted a post office in 1851 which is the same year the railway reached this town. The railway played an essential role in transporting goods as well as passengers. Local sawmills were the leading suppliers of timber in this area with a local depot. The depot mainly contributed to the thriving of transport businesses. Rev. William Stevenson became the first person to administer the first Methodist sermon exclusively. Even during the Great Depression, rail and bus stops were still in operation until the services reduced due to a decline in production.
