Fort Davis is an unincorporated community in, a census-designated place in, and the county seat of Jeff Davis County. It was originally an Indian camp that was later established in 1854 to accommodate the soldiers that are needed to watch and guard the community from Apaches. Fort Davis was named after Jefferson Davis, the Secretary of War during that time. Diedrick Dutchover was left in charge of the fort during the Civil War; however, they were attacked by the Apaches and were forced to abandon the place. In 1867, the Ninth U.S. Cavalry reclaimed the fort until the Apaches attacked it again in 1879. After several hard-fought engagements, the Apaches finally retreated to Mexico, where many of them died in the battle against Mexican troops. Afterwhich, Fort Davis enjoyed a quiet routine, attracting numerous cattlemen to move into the area. The soldiers remained to watch and guard the community while repairing roads and telegraph lines. When the military functionality of Fort Davis came to an end, the post was abandoned in 1891.
