Fredonia is located in northern Mason County. There is a 200-foot-high granite formation that is known as Spy Rock. The first settlers came around 1858. An early school called Hayes and Lathum School was established. Originally the town was called Deerton, but the name changed in 1880 when there was a conflict. However, the school was named Deer Creek School. This rural market community became a stage stop in the late 1880s. in the 1900s, Fredonia’s economy changed from cotton farming to peanut farming. Numerous small landholdings were also consolidated into larger ones. The population peaked in 1920s and dropped to 50 in 2000.
