Located in southwestern Hutchinson County, Fritch was founded by three ranchers in 1924. Its name came from H. C. Fritch, a vice president of the Rock Island Railroad. After the line was opened, Fritch established a depot. During the 1920s, Panhandle oil boomed in Fritch. In 1965, the Lake Meredith dam was built which provided economic stability for the following 10 years. The town faced a tornado in 1992 and a fire in 2014 while Lake Meredith experienced a drought. Today, Fritch has become the home to Lake Meredith Recreational Area and Alibates National Park. The population as of 2010 is a total of 2,117 people.
