Garden City’s history began in 1886 when the post office was established in the general store. The town was named after a man named Garden. He was the store proprietor, it was supposed to be named just Garden but there was a clerical error by the officials in Washington. Garden City contested to be a county seat when Glasscock County was established in 1893. New California was chosen at the time but there was a unique compromise where Garden City moved most of its structures to the New California site and the site was renamed to Garden City on the 5th of April in 1893. The town is an unincorporated community and a CDP as well as the county seat. The population was 334 as of the 2010 census.
