Garwood was formed around the 1900s when farmers started growing rice west of the Colorado River. M.H. Townsend, W.T. Burford, and T.A. Hill were the three men responsible for picking the town’s name. The town’s name was chosen for Hiram Morgan Garwood, who was a lawyer from Bastrop. The community is unincorporated and is located in Colorado County in Texas. The community lies on State Highway 71. Almost 1,000 people lived in the town as of the 2000 census. The community’s public education is being distributed by the Rice Consolidated Independent School District. Even though the coterie is unincorporated, Garwood has a post office.
