Greenwood is an unincorporated community in Midland County and is part of the Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was first settled as a farming community back in the late 1890s. In 1907, Greenwood Baptist Church was established, naming it after the two missionaries who helped with its founding: Reverend Green and Reverend Wood. The community took the name of the church in 1926. In 1990, the community had three churches, two stores, a public school system, a volunteer fire department, and a barbershop. The community supports acronym traditions like MOE for Matter of Effort or Maintenance of Effort, MOU for Memorandum of Understanding, and NCLB for No Child Left Behind. As of 2000, its population was 2,000.
