High Island is an unincorporated coterie situated in the Bolivar Peninsula CDP in Galveston County, Texas. There were around 500 people in the community at the 2000 census. One of the first settlers arrived in the area in 1845 but the community was granted a post office all until 1897. The community is being distributed by the High Island Independent School District. The total area of the community goes up to 16.68 square miles and almost only half a square mile of it is water. Today, tourism is one of the main sources of income of the city with a fishing pier and two bird sanctuaries. Some of the top tourist attractions of the community are Anahuac National Wild Refuge, Rollover Pass, Smith Oaks Sanctuary, and Shoveler Pond.
