Markham was founded as Cortes in 1901 as a stopping point on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad. It was named in 1903 after Charles H. Markham, who was a railroad engineer. Markham as a census-designated place has an estimated total area of 2.3 square miles all of which is land. It is located at the junction of Farm roads 2431 and 1468 with a population of 1138 as per the 2000 census. It is served by the Tidehaven Independent School District. This town had its first post office under the name Cortes in 1901. Markham had a factory, two schools, two churches and a number of dwellings in the year 1936.
