Considered as the “mother city” of the Panhandle, Mobeetie is a city located in Wheeler County, Texas. It was established in 1874 when it became a supply center for buffalo hunters; back then, the area was called Hidetown. The community was then named Sweetwater; however, the name was rejected for a post office because it was already taken. Thus, the Indian term for Sweetwater, Mobeetie, was then submitted and approved. Mobeetie once became the county seat and throughout the 1880s, the city became a commercial center and a shipping point. The city features several businesses that include livery stables, saloons, wagon yards, hotels, and even a Chinese laundry. It is also home to some rustlers, gamblers, and prostitutes. The town was enjoying its heyday until the railroad bypassed the town, causing businesses to move out. The number of residents started to decline from its zenith of 400. As of 2010, it has a population of 101.
