Hamlett, Jr. applied the town for a post office in December 1881. The town’s name is believed that it comes from the white sand on a mountain that is located east of the community. The community’s public education system is being provided by the Palestine Independent School District. The town is located within Palestine Statistical Area. One of the very first settlers of the area was P.G. Oldman who built his home just northwest of today’s community.
