Originally named Lone Star, the area was then changed to Mount Vernon in honor of Washington’s estate. It was established in 1849. In the spring of 1975, the Franklin County was organized and Mount Vernon was elected as county seat. The railroad arrived in 1887 and Mount Vernon became the major supply and shipping center for the county’s farmers. It was also the site of a planning mill that served the county’s lumbering interests. Countryfest is an event that is held on every second Saturday in October. The Bankhead Highway Visitors Center is found in the home of Colonel Henry Clay Thruston, the tallest soldier in the Civil War.
