Found in extreme southeastern Robertson County, Mumford was named for one of the earliest county residents, Jesse Mumford. The community was established on the east bank of the Brazos in a plantation area. Italian immigrants were brought in to work the land on shares. They became landowners and attracted other immigrants to the area. In 1895, the first iron bridge was built across the Brazos, connecting Robertson and Burleson counties but it was washed away four years later. In 1899, Mumford experienced a flood and never fully recovered. As of 2000, the population of 170 remained the same as in the early 1990s.
