Neches in located four miles from the Neches River in eastern Anderson County. The railroad was built in the year 1872. A post office was built about the same time and was called Nechesville. Just after the Civil War, the nearby Stovall Academy moved into town and was renamed the Neches Normal Institute. This later became the Neches High School. The town officially changed its name from Nechesville to Neches in 1892. During the early 1930s, a fire broke out across the railway tracks which burnt half the town. The population declined from 900 inhabitants in 1939 to 175 in 2000.
