New Baden is part of the fraternity of Texas towns named after former cities in Germany. Located in central Robertson County, it was named after Baden-Baden. The town was founded in 1881 by German immigrants. They first built a two-story structure that is now known as the Colony House to provide lodging for families. The main economy activity was farming. The Meyer home, the first residence, housed that family, the post office, and a railway ticket office; it also served as a freight depot. The population of the area had increased slight from 105 people in 1990 to 150 residents in 2000.
