Also known as Presswood, the town in southeastern Montgomery County was named as New Caney. The community was founded in the 1860s. it was known as Presswood for the pioneers, Austin and Sarah Waters Presswood who settled in the area in 1862. Cattle-loading pens were set up, and the community became a shipping point for livestock. New Caney began as an agricultural town, but grew as the local lumber industry developed. In the 1920s the economy declined but then later revived with the lumber industry. As of 2010, the population of the New Caney area is 19,987.
