Novice, a city in Coleman County, Texas with a population of 139 based on the 2010 census. and a total land area of 0.5 square miles. The city was formerly known as Tyro in the 1870s and there was even a post office opened under that name, although it closed the next year. This can be seen from an 1882 Texas General Land Office map. Its name, Novice, was submitted when the post office reopened in 1884, as a witty gesture because there were novice business owners in the area at that time. The town moved one mile north in 1910 when a railroad was built with a small town named Atoka also joining in their movement. The notable Dallas-born Randy McAllister was raised in Novice. He was an American blues and Americana drummer, harmonica player, singer and songwriter.
