Oakland is located on a site originally owned by the 19th-century American pioneer, James Bowie, who also played a prominent role in the Texas Revolution until his death at the Battle of the Alamo. Oakland is also an unincorporated community situated just southwest of the intersection of Farm roads 532 and 2144, on the Lavaca county line eight miles south of Weimar in northwest Colorado County. Formerly known as Prairie Point in 1844 the community, the area was laid out by A. C. Herford in 1857. Amasa Turner agreed to move his post office in Lavaca County to Herford's location with the premise that the post office retains the name Oakland. This name was also chosen in honor of David G. Burnet's home. The post office was moved because Herford could not secure a post office because of the town's nearness to other post offices. Although unincorporated, it has a ZIP code of 78951 and it has a population of 26 in 2010.
