Old Ocean, is an unincorporated community formerly called Chance's Prairie, is situated on State highways 35 and 524 five miles northwest of Sweeny in southwestern Brazoria County. It was located on the land grant made to Joseph H. Polley and Samuel Chance on July 27, 1824. One of the founders of Chance's Prairie was William B. Sweeny who bought 2,319 acres (9.38 km2) from Polley and Chance for $1,950 and development occurred until James Abercrombie discovered oil nearby in 1934 which prompted the creation of a government oil refinery for making high-octane gas. Closed during the end of World War II, this oilfield was called Old Ocean, and the name eventually adopted in 1936 by the town eventually. The town had a post office established in 1945 with the same name. Currently, the town is being redeveloped into an industrial facility and both State Highway 35 and FM 524 have been bypassed around the townsite.
