Olmito has a total area of 0.73 square miles, located in south-central Cameron County Interstate 69E/U.S. Route 77/U.S. Route 83 runs along the eastern side of the community, leading northwest 10 miles (16 km) to San Benito and south 9 miles (14 km) to Brownsville. Olmito Lake can be found on Olmito's northern part while Resaca del Rancho Viejo, an ancient channel of the Rio Grande, forms the western edge of the community. Having a status of the census-designated place (CDP), Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District served its education when it was consolidated with the Olmito Independent School District in 1970. Olmito was given attention since the 1980s because of the John Lennon Memorial Park, leased to the county at a dollar a year by the McNamara brothers because Lennon "did a great deal to promote peace and world harmony." Its post office was established in 1905, closed in 1918, and reopened again in 1925. A station was established in the area in 1911 when the St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railway was constructed. It reached a population of 1,210 in 2010 and is also part of the Brownsville–Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area.
