Ottine is located nine miles northwest of Gonzales in western Gonzales County, Texas. It is an unincorporated community and reached a population of 90 in 2000. Home to Palmetto State Park, it is also home to an urban legend surrounding a Bigfoot-like humanoid "swamp thing". The name was a combination of the name of the founding settlers in 1879, Adolf Otto, and his wife Christine. It was even named Otto's Mill and was also named Otto's Station when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway made it a stop on their route. The town's first enterprise was a water gin which was also built by Otto. They took advantage of the natural sulfur springs found in the nearby swamp. On September 11, 1933, the Texas State Parks Board acquired 198 acres of the Ottine Swamp which became the Palmetto State Park. The Warm Springs Foundation for Crippled Children (Texas Rehabilitation Center of Gonzales ) was also established in 1937.
