Palmer is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. This town in Ellis County, Texas is on Interstate Highway 45 and U.S. Highway 75, twelve miles northeast of Waxahachie in northeastern Ellis County. Interstate 45 passes through the east side of the town, with access from Exits 258 through 260; I-45 leads north 27 miles (43 km) to downtown Dallas and south 8 miles (13 km) to Ennis. Waxahachie, the county seat, is 11 miles (18 km) to the west. It was named after Dr. D.S. Palmer, a prominent shareholder in the Houston and Texas Central Railroad. The railroad arrived in 1872 and its post office branch opened in 1874. Palmer was incorporated in 1890 and by 1896 the weekly Palmer Times was being published. The Palmer Press Brick Company also built a manufacturing plant in 1902 and bricks impressed with the name still surface from time to time - or are found in the brick sidewalks of collectors. With a total area of 3.0 square miles, it has one airport, Dallas South Port Airport (T13) with 1 Runway. The population of Palmer reached 2,073 in 2017.
