Known as the ‘Strawberry Capital of Texas’, Poteet is located in the north-central of Atascosa County. It was named after its first postmaster, Francis Marion Poteet. In 1904, artesian wells were discovered in the area which attracted farmers to the location. In 1918, Gustav Aigner who was an experienced strawberry farmer caused the strawberries to be one of the town’s major crops. Tourists can view a water tower that resembles a strawberry as well as a 1,600 pound ‘World’s Largest Strawberry’. Since 1948, a three-day strawberry festival has been held every April. The other major source of income besides strawberries were farming of peanuts, onions, and watermelons.
