According to local legend, the area in northwestern Coryell County was named Purmela which was a mistake. Martin Dremien had submitted Furmela, the name of his girlfriend. It is an unincorporated community. The area is part of the Killeen Temple Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Purmela had a church and a post office in the 1980s. Basham, Sycamore, and Evergreen schools consolidated in 1901 to form the Purmela ISD. It was then consolidated with the Gatesville ISD. The population remained constant at 125 through the mid-1960s, but by 1970 it had dropped to 40. In 1990 the population was reported as 61, a slight decline from 1968.
