Known as Catclaw, Putnam was born with the arrival of the railroad in 1880. It is located in eastern Callahan County. It is part of the Abilene, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The namesake is said to be General Israel Putnam - a Revolutionary soldier who more famous in Connecticut than in Texas. Fruit raising and oil production was a major influence to the economy. A resident, J. H. Burkett, discovered the original paper shell pecan tree east of Putnam. In 1966 the Texas Historical Commission placed a marker at the site of the tree.
